LET’S NOT KID OURSELVES

Giving honest feedback in difficult conversations

Do you feel uncomfortable giving corrective feedback? Do you sidestep or mishandle difficult conversations? Many leaders fear and fail when it comes to giving feedback.

But, fact is, your team actually wants the constructive criticism you dread giving! According to a study shared in Harvard Business Review, most employees believe corrective feedback does more to improve their performance than positive feedback.

But there’s a catch: they say the feedback has to be delivered appropriately for it to be effective. When this is the case, feedback is what fuels and guides our personal and professional growth. When this is the case, feedback is… the gift of growth.

In this interactive talk, I’ll share my lessons learnt (some of them the hard way!) and specific techniques to give constructive feedback effectively, and handle difficult conversations with finesse.

And let’s not kid ourselves. The benefits of feedback don’t end here. According to Forbes, leaders who give honest feedback have employees who are three times more engaged. And this is just the beginning!

“I’ve rarely seen such a passionate speaker and facilitator as Tobias. It was a very important event for a special group of Engineers from all over Europe and Middle East. I was impressed by how well he captured our intentions and helped structure them and build the messages we wanted to convey. I highly recommend Tobias as a facilitator for whatever event you intend to kick-off.”

“When John, aka ‘Dog’, an inmate convicted of murder, said ‘Tobias, you have ONE chance to explain yourself’, all of a sudden choosing what to say next became very important.

During the nine years I served as priest, I faced many situations where picking my words carefully made all the difference. Apart from working with prisoners and preaching in times of crisis, I accompanied terminal patients and lead communities with people from all walks of life and who faced many different challenges. I was also fortunate to contrast these experiences with degrees in Philology (the science of language) and Conflict Resolution.

On the whole, I’ve dedicated a multitude of hours to optimizing communication. This has allowed me to identify specific patterns in order to determine what people want and need to hear in the most effective manner possible.

Since 2012, I draw on this experience to train teams to implement and integrate these effective patterns that enable them to give and take straight-up feedback. Through workshops, coaching and keynote speeches, I help people become better team players.

I’ve had the honor of working with wonderful people in companies like Citibank, Ebay, Henkel, HP, King, Paypal and Roche. I also have a fantastic time teaching persuasive communication to the Executive MBA students at IESE Business School in Barcelona and Madrid.” — Tobias
